Two National Records Set in Lithuania: Largest U.S. Flag in the Country’s History Raised in Vilnius to Mark America’s 250th Anniversary
On July 4, as the United States of America celebrates the 250th anniversary of its independence, the largest foreign national flag ever displayed in Lithuania was raised on the Vilnius TV Tower.
As part of this joint initiative by the American Chamber of Commerce in Lithuania, the U.S. Embassy in Lithuania, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, two new records were set: the largest flag of a foreign country – the United States of America – ever flown in Lithuania; and the largest foreign national flag ever flown in the City of Vilnius, displayed from the Vilnius TV Tower. The U.S. flag measures 540 square meters (5,813 square feet) and weighs 70 kilograms (154 pounds). Laid flat, it would cover an entire NBA basketball court.
According to the organizers, the initiative was conceived as a symbolic gift marking the 250th anniversary of the United States and as an expression of gratitude for the long-standing strategic partnership between the two nations.
“Today, we raised more than a record-breaking flag – we raised the values that have united Lithuania and the United States for decades. These shared values are reflected in business as well, fostering trust, encouraging investment, and strengthening long-term partnerships. Today, Lithuania plays an important role in Shift4’s growth across Europe, where our team develops innovative payment solutions for customers around the world. As we celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, we wanted to create a symbol that would inspire, remind us of our shared history, and demonstrate the strength of the transatlantic partnership. We are proud that this initiative has become a historic record for Lithuania,” said Tadas Vizgirda, Chairman of the Board of the American Chamber of Commerce in Lithuania and Head of Shift4 Payments Lithuania.
The ceremonial event at the Vilnius TV Tower was also attended by U.S. Ambassador Kara C. McDonald, Lithuania’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Audra Plepytė, Vice Mayor of the City of Vilnius Simona Bieliūnė, and other guests.
